Indian cricket vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is currently hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Sydney following a severe rib injury that led to internal bleeding and a laceration to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025.
Shreyas Iyer sustained the injury while taking a remarkable running catch to dismiss Alex Carey, crashing awkwardly on his left side near backward point. Though he initially walked off the field unaided, his condition quickly deteriorated after returning to the dressing room, prompting immediate action from India’s medical team. His vital signs reportedly dropped to dangerous levels, and a rapid response is believed to have averted a possible medical emergency.
Hospital scans revealed Iyer suffered a spleen laceration along with internal bleeding under his rib cage. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Iyer is medically stable, and remains under close observation from specialists both in Sydney and India. Currently, he is expected to remain in the ICU for up to a week, possibly longer if bleeding does not subside.
Initial estimates suggested a three-week recovery window, but given the severity of internal bleeding, this period may extend significantly. There is no definitive timeline for Iyer’s return to competitive cricket, as rehabilitation will depend on how his body heals from both rib and spleen injuries.
The Indian team doctor and support staff are present in Sydney, closely monitoring Iyer’s progress and keeping his family informed. The BCCI is also providing full medical support and remains in contact regarding his ongoing condition.
While Iyer’s situation was, at one point, life-threatening, prompt medical intervention has stabilized his condition. He remains in ICU, under careful observation, with his future participation in cricket to be determined by the pace of his recovery.
Shreyas Iyer, born on December 6, 1994, has over 2,800 runs, maintaining an average close to 48, with 5 centuries and 22 fifties in ODIs. He has played 14 Test matches for India, scoring 811 runs at an average of 36.86, with one century and five fifties. In Indian Premier League (IPL), he lead Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, then was bought by Punjab Kings at a record INR 26.75 crore in 2025 and made captain.
