| Karachi – Pakistan experienced a 5 magnitude earthquake on Saturday evening at a shallow depth of 10km, raising concern about potential aftershocks. This marks the second tremor in October for relatively active region after earlier 4.6 magnitude struck on October 5. While no immediate damage or casualties were reported, the shallow nature of quake can result in stronger ground shaking and are generally considered more hazardous due to their proximity to the earth’s surface. Pakistan is located in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. This geological setting contributes to frequent seismic activity, especially in provinces like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Balochistan, in particular, lies near the Arabian-Eurasian plate boundary, increasing its vulnerability. Even regions like Punjab and Sindh, while less prone, remain at risk due to their tectonic positioning. |
