| The prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition politician and activist Maria Corina Machado. The former opposition presidential candidate in Venezuela was lauded for being a “key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided – an opposition that found common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government,” said Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee. According to a press release by the committee Machado is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” As the leader of the democracy movement in Venezuela, Maria Corina Machado is one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times, the release said. A total of 338 nominations had been submitted for the award, including 244 individuals and 94 organisations. United States President Donald Trump was among the nominees for stopping multiple wars. The winner will get prize of $1.2m along-with diploma and gold medal on 10th December – the death anniversary of Swedish Industrialist Afred Nobel. |
